Manual lymphatic drainage

Manual lymphatic drainage is a gentle form of massage used to treat swelling or lymphedema. These are caused by an obstruction in the return flow of the lymph. The removal of lymph nodes, as well as scars, wounds, burns, vascular problems or orthopedic and surgical operations can be responsible for congestion.

Dr. Vodder, a Danish biologist developed Manual Lymphatic Drainage, named after him, in the 1920s and 1930s. His work was further developed and scientifically substantiated by Dr. Asdonk and Drs. Földi and Földi.

The lymph

The lymph consists of fluid, blood cells, as well as nutrients such as protein and fat and disposes of cells / foreign bodies from the intercellular tissue. Through the lymphocytes, there is a close link to immunological processes. The lymph is colorless - in the abdominal cavity it becomes milky after fatty foods.

The lymphatic vessel system

The lymphatic vessels remove the so-called lymphatic load from the skin, muscles, tendons, bones and internal organs. The lymphatic system is stimulated by:

• elevation
• manual lymphatic drainage
• the deep breathing
• applied movement therapy & instruction for self-treatment

• Decrease of swellings
• pain relief
• calms the vegetative nervous system
• relieves the veins
• influences the immune system (not scientifically proven)

• knee and hip prostheses
• sports injuries
• Migraine & whiplash
• Chronic sinus problems
• Swelling due to circulatory problems / CVI
• Lipedema
• Pregnancy edema
• Swelling after cancer surgery (lymph node removal / radiation damage)

Registration & Information

The therapy is usually paid by the health insurance companies if you have a prescription from your doctor. Occasionally it is also paid without a prescription, this depends on your additional insurance. Please clarify this in advance with your insurance company.
