Manual lymphatic drainage is an essential component in physical decongestion treatment.

If the function of the lymphatic system is disturbed (by e.g. congenital = primary lymphedema or secondary lymphedema due to diseases/surgeries) "water" accumulates in the tissue (interstitial fluid) and swelling (edema) occurs.

Lymphatic drainage uses special massage techniques (developed by Dr. Vodder and further developed by Dr. Asdonk and Dr. Földi) to increase the transport capacity of the lymphatic vascular system and to move interstitial fluid from the peripheral to the central flow areas.

Manual lymphatic drainage is thus used for edema and decongestion therapy of edematous regions on the body such as the trunk and extremities (arms/legs).
