Basic insurance (LAMal)

Everyone living in Switzerland must be insured with a health insurance company. Basic insurance mainly reimburses medical, pharmacy and physiotherapy bills.

All insurers offer exactly the same benefits, no more, no less. There is therefore no competition between insurance companies, except in terms of the services they offer (speed of reimbursement, welcome on the telephone, clarity of information). You can join any caisse, and no caisse has the right to refuse you, whatever your state of health (unless you are in arrears with your premiums).

Supplementary insurance

Supplementary health insurance is the subject of specific contracts that vary enormously from one insurance company to another. They reimburse a whole range of therapies, such as osteopathy and acupuncture.

Before signing up to such a contract, it's vital to read all the clauses carefully.

Note that if you are costing your complementary health insurance company too much, it can easily break the contract, making it impossible for you to join another health insurance company.
